Since its release, this mini baby doll has won the hearts of many American Girl® fans. About the American Girl® Caring for Baby Set 

[Image and description from the American Girl website] Along with the 8-inch baby doll, the Caring for Baby Set comes with a lot of fun accessories. The baby comes dressed in a top, footed pants, and a bow headband. For mealtime, the set includes a high chair, bib, bowl with food, spoon, and a bottle. For changing time, you’ll find two diapers, a wipe case, and a changing mat. There is currently just one version of the set available, which includes a light skinned baby with dark brown hair and brown eyes. The set was released in spring 2021, and as of September 2021 is still available at American Girl®.

There are a few similarly sized baby dolls currently available on the market. The biggest differences between the American Girl® 8-inch baby and these alternatives are the facial features and the body material. The American Girl® 8-inch baby is the only one with a poseable vinyl body. This is also a unique feature compared to other mini baby dolls that American Girl® has previously produced, such as Baby Polly (part of Felicity’s collection) and the Baby and Stroller Set available from 2005-2007, which both had cloth bodies. While the vinyl body makes the doll less cuddly, it allows for lots of adorable posing alongside 18-inch dolls! 

Post update (Thanks Teena!) Target sells an all-vinyl version of the 8" baby in a boxed set with a tub and hooded bath towel for $15, in addition to the cloth-body versions that are $4. Perfectly Cute 8" Baby Doll 

Another doll worth comparing to the American Girl® 8-inch baby is the Disney nuiMOs©. While these plush character dolls are not comparable to the baby dolls themselves, it turns out that the collection of nuiMOs© outfits can fit the American Girl® 8-inch baby fairly well. 

The Ultimate Pattern Collection for American Girl® 8-inch Baby Doll 

The larougetdelisle Pattern Collection is always growing, and new patterns for the American Girl® 8-inch Baby Doll are currently in the works!

Since the 8-inch baby is around half the height of the 15-inch Bitty Baby®, we have a trick for converting accessory patterns that are designed for the 15-inch Bitty Baby® into a nice size for the 8-inch baby! When printing the pattern, simply select 50% scaling. For instance, the My Baby Sitter 15" Baby Doll Accessory pattern scaled down to 50% for printing works great for the 8-inch baby! Just remember to rescale the 1/4" seam allowance to the appropriate width after printing the pattern at 50% since it will be scaled down to a narrower width.

Another accessory pattern to try for your 8-inch baby is the My Sunshine Dolls Baby Carrier Pattern. The infant carrier in this pattern also fits the 8-inch baby doll, and can be worn by an 18-inch doll! 

For clothing patterns, the 50% scaling trick doesn’t produce the perfect fit, so keep an eye out for more patterns designed for the 8-inch baby coming soon.

We tested the 123 Mulberry St Basic Playsuit scaled at 50%, and compared it to a redesigned version adapted to fit the 8-inch baby more precisely. The Basic Playsuit pattern designed specifically for the 8-inch baby has a much better fit!

Disney ILY 4ever compared to American Girl:

Like you, we were wondering how these 18-inch ILY 4ever dolls compare to the 18-inch American Girl dolls. Surprisingly, they are pretty close! We have a "Inspired by Cinderella" doll and have a set of pictures showing her in comparison to the American Girl Luciana doll. The Luciana doll is wearing a dress from the Liberty Jane pattern collection (coming soon!) The dresses can be worn by either doll and fit just about the same on each body.

To get a better look at the body, here are a few images of the doll both wearing the 123 Mulberry St Gotchies pattern for 18-inch dolls.

The Disney ILY 4ever doll has a full cloth body, similar to the American Girl doll. Her arm length is a bit longer and her waistline is a straighter, but overall they are pretty close. 

Here's a look from the side to see that the ILY 4ever doll is more similar to an American Girl Doll than a Journey Girls or My Life As doll which as much slimmer.

Looking for doll clothes for the new Disney ILY 4ever doll? We're pretty confident that most of the patterns designed for 18-inch dolls (such as American Girl) will fit this doll too! You can browse our full collection of 18-inch Doll Clothes patterns here.

Some of the shoes can be swapped, like flats, slip ons and sandals. But the ILY 4ever doll does have a slightly larger foot, just slightly.

 Siblies™ Doll Compared To Similar Dolls

When comparing the Siblies height (center doll) to the larger Fashion Friends dolls on the right, the 12" Siblies are somewhere around chin-height, perfect as a little sibling! The Fashion Friends doll in the picture above measures 15-inches tall, and is wearing Gotchies from the 123 Mulberry St. pattern designed to fit 14.5 to 15" dolls. The other doll shown on the left, is a 13" Little Darling doll by Dianna Effner. In addition to the 1-inch height difference, the proportions of the Little Darling and the Siblies are quite different. The Siblies are much slimmer, with shorter legs, though their arm length is about the same.

Wondering What Shoes Will Fit A Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ Doll?

Just like The Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ doll, the Siblies have a long narrow foot, with a tiny space in between their big toe and second toe, allowing them to wear flip flops! It may be a little hard to tell in the photos, but the Siblies doll’s feet are about 1/8" longer, and 1/16" wider than the Little Darling doll feet. They may be able to share some shoes, if they are designed to be on the roomier side for Little Darlings. The shoes that Kelsey arrived in however, are made quite roomy for her, and are much too long for the Little Darling doll.

Differences Between Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins®

The Bitty Baby® doll is meant to represent a newborn baby, while the twins are meant to represent toddlers. The bodies of the baby and twin dolls are nearly identical in design and size, as is detailed in the following chart.

Note: The Shoulder measurement is taken from shoulder point to shoulder point across the front of the body only. The Chest, Waist, and Hip measurements are taken all the way around the circumference of the body. 

Other than the difference in hair style (painted on versus wig), the primary difference between the two types of dolls is in the shoulders. The Bitty Baby® has a shoulder seam in the cloth body, constructed similarly to a sleeve, while the Twin's shoulder is one continuous piece with the rest of the cloth body. Despite this difference in construction, both dolls have the same armscye.  

The Bitty Baby® shown here was purchased in 2020, and older versions of the doll may have had shoulders without seams, as the twin dolls did. 

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Compared to Other Dolls

There are almost countless options for baby dolls on the market. If you are shopping for a baby doll that you hope is similar in size to the Bitty Baby® or Twin, many 15-inch dolls are roughly the same size. For instance, the Melissa and Doug® 15-inch baby doll has very similar measurements to the American Girl® baby dolls, and patterns designed to fit the Bitty Baby®/Twins® fit this doll fairly well, as shown in the green and white outfits above. 

While both the Bitty Baby® and the M&D dolls have a pleat in their cloth bodies at the hips to allow them to pose sitting, the above image shows that the effect is more dramatic in the Bitty Baby®, while the M&D baby is a bit more flat. Yet, looking back to the measurement chart, this difference didn't result in much of a difference in hip size. 

Bitty Baby® and Bitty Twins® Compared to 18-inch Dolls

Above is a size chart comparing an 18-inch American Girl® doll and a Bitty Baby®. While they are different in height, their upper body measurements are not too different, making some tops and dresses able to fit both dolls. 

Get the Look: The above dress is made from the Sweet And Simple Dress Pattern by 123 Mulberry St, and is designed to fit 15-inch baby dolls.  

What About Shoes?

The Bitty Baby/Twin® foot is similar in width to the 18-inch AG foot, but is a bit shorter. Closed toed shoes that are made for 18-inch dolls, like the white boots both dolls wear above, can be worn by the Babies. Open-toed shoes might look too long or not stay on the Baby foot securely.

About Ruby Red Fashion Friends™

Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ are a newly released line of doll that offers something for everyone. Doll collectors are thrilled to see the new faces designed by doll artist Dianna Effner. These dolls are also one of the most affordable dolls in the ball-jointed-doll (BJD) category. A more novice collector, or someone shopping for the perfect doll to gift to their daughter or granddaughter, may be drawn to the Ruby Red doll because of their sweet faces, fun-to-style hair, posable limbs, and their approachable size of 14.5-inches.

The Ultimate Pattern Collection for Ruby Red Fashion Friends™

The larougetdelisle Pattern Collection for Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ is growing nearly everyday! Some great patterns have already been released that are designed specifically to fit this great doll. The great thing about these dolls is that they can also wear the many of the clothing patterns designed for Wellies. As discussed in the section below, the RRFF is close in size to other 14-14.5-inch dolls such as WellieWishers™, so some patterns designed to fit WW are also a great fit for Ruby Red dolls as well. 

Get the Pattern: Shown above modeled by Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ Bella, the Sew Urban ruffled top doll clothes PDF pattern will add a touch of femininity to her wardrobe! The cascading ruffles are the star of the show with this easy to sew design! This cute top can be made with or without sleeves and closes in the back with hook and loop tape. It can be made with a knit or woven fabric (floral top is a woven). This pattern is designed to also fit 14.5-inch dolls such as WellieWishers™ and Hearts For Hearts Girls®, and also fits Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ dolls without any alterations.

 Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ Compared To Similar Dolls

Customers have found that RRFF dolls vary slightly in height which is likely due to variation in how tightly their joints have been strung together, as they are a BJD (Ball Jointed Doll). The official height of the Ruby Red doll is 14.5-inches tall, but may vary to around 15-inches depending on the doll. The picture above demonstrates that our Ruby Red doll is about 1/2-inch taller than our 14.5-inch WellieWishers™ doll to her left. In the photo, all three dolls are wearing Gotchies from the 123 Mulberry St. pattern designed to fit 14 to 14.5-inch dolls, which demonstrates that while the dolls are all similar in size, there are some key differences in their proportions.  

Comparing the three dolls, the RRFF has the longest legs and arms, and a slightly wider waist and hip measurement. When sewing or buying clothes for the RRFF, it is helpful to know that knit tops or dresses designed to fit WellieWishers™ generally fit the RRFF because they have a bit of stretch. The only caveat is that long sleeves designed for a WW fit the RRFF more like a 3/4-length sleeve. Skirt hems will also fall a bit shorter on the RRFF, but are generally still an appropriate length for the doll depending on the design and length preference. More fitted garments made from non-stretch woven fabrics are more likely to have fit issues unless they are designed specifically to fit a Ruby Red doll. 

Wondering What Shoes Will Fit A Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ Doll?

The Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ doll has a long narrow foot, with a tiny space in between her big toe second toe, allowing her to potentially wear flip flops! Yay! Although, her foot is a tiny bit longer than a Hearts for Hearts Girls doll, she can wear the HFHG shoes. We've tried on the little plastic flats that come with a HFHG doll and they fit great. We've also tried on the Liberty Jane Janes (designed for HFHG dolls with the Shape 2 sole) and they fit nicely.

The Ruby Red Fashion Friends doll pictured above is wearing, from left to right, The Genoa Jumper over the T-shirt with HFHG flats, The Sew Urban Ruffled Tee and LJ 14.5" Dolls Jeans (made with super stretchy upcycled denim) and the LJ Janes For HFHG dolls, and finally, the Karen Lorraine Lux Cardigan over the basic t-shirt and the Sew Urban Handkerchief Skirt (all designed originally for 14.5" WW dolls).

As you can see in the photos above and below, the WellieWisher has a much shorter and wider foot so shoes designed for Wellies are very hard to get on, although we've managed to get a few on. The pink tennies in the first image of this post are sold by Sofia's and desiged to fit a Wellie. They are super snug, but work in a pinch.

The Shape 2 pre-cut shoe sole and the patterns designed to be made with that sole shape should fit the Ruby Red Fashion Friends™ doll. The sole measures 2.2" in length and the RRFF doll foot measures 2" from the heel to the tallest part.

Boy Dolls: An Overview

For years doll fans were making their own boy dolls by replacing the wigs on their American Girl® dolls, always wondering why they couldn’t just purchase a boy doll to complete their collection. A few years back, boy dolls started to become more popular as manufacturers such as American Girl® and Our Generation® released this new category of doll. If you have ever wondered, “What are all the different types of boy dolls out there?” “Who makes them and where can I buy them?” or “How do they compare to the girl dolls?” hopefully this article will answer those questions.

Most boy dolls are made by manufacturers by simply changing the face mold and hair of a doll, without any change to the size and shape of the doll body. For this reason, most boy dolls will be the same size as any girl doll from the same brand. 

Get the pattern: Here an American Girl® Girl and Boy Doll are both shown wearing the Mercury Flightsuit from the pattern made by Forget Me Not Designs.  As you can see by this example, the boy doll and girl doll have the same size and shape body and can wear the same size clothing.

Some designs look great on both boy and girl dolls, like many uniforms and sports clothing. Other patterns have been designed specifically for boy dolls to get that classic masculine styling and fit.

Our Generation® Measurements

Our Generation® dolls are 18-inches tall, making them comparable to American Girl® dolls. The two brands of dolls have very similar bodies, and are pictured above in 123 Mulberry Street Gotchies both made from the same size pattern in order to show the similarities and differences in their proportions. The side-by-side comparison demonstrates that the Our Generation® doll has slightly smaller shoulders than the AG doll, who has a bit broader shoulders. The American Girl® doll also has a slightly longer torso than the OG doll. These differences between the two dolls mean that while most patterns and clothes made to fit 18-inch dolls should fit both dolls well, some slight adjustments may need to be made around the bodice of tailored garments to be sure that pieces fit the Our Generation® doll just right.

Collection: Regular

The “Regular” line of dolls by Our Generation® do not have bendable limbs. They are the most basic option of OG doll as they come with only the doll and outfit. There are too many great Regular OG dolls to name them each here, but featured below are some of our favorites.

The company practices slow manufacturing to reduce waste and maintain great product quality. This means that they take care to only manufacture the amount of dolls they know will be sold, and have begun an initiative to eliminate single use plastic from their packaging. They also donate returned or damaged merchandise to children’s organizations rather than sending the goods to the landfill. Due to their slow manufacturing practices, you may have to wait for a new restock of dolls before you can order your AGAT.

WellieWishers™ Measurements

Here the 14.5-inch WellieWishers™ is shown between the Glitter Girls® and Hearts For Hearts Girls™ dolls which are similar in size. The dolls are each wearing 123 Mulberry Street Gotchies made from the same pattern to show the slight differences in size and proportions between the three different dolls. As the photo and size chart display, the WellieWishers™ doll has a slightly longer torso than other two dolls, and a bit broader shoulders than the Hearts For Hearts Girls® doll. The WellieWishers™ also have hard plastic bodies like the HFHG®, while the Glitter Girls® dolls have softer limbs which can be posed into many different postures.

Foot size and shoe options: It should also be noted that each doll has slightly different sized feet, so some shoes can be shared between dolls, but not all will fit properly. We have shoe patterns sized specifically for the WellieWishers™ and Hearts for Hearts Girls® dolls. The Wellie has a slightly shorter and wider foot then the HFHG. The larougetdelisle pre-cut Shape 3 Shoe Sole is designed for the WW foot. If a shoe pattern is a closed toe design, the Shape 2 sole/Shoe design can fit all three dolls.

Here is an Illustration showing the body measurements for several of these types of dolls with a picture of them side by side for clarity. This first set of images lists basic measurements in a few places. To add clarification to the chart, the waist is measured at the side tag, hips measured around the largest part of the bottom, chest measured right under the arms, arms measured to the wrist, and legs measured at the inseam to the floor.

Here is a picture with 4 different American Girl Dolls and their slight variations in measurements. Mia is the biggest doll that we have and Molly is the smallest and has a slightly longer body than all of the other AG’s that we have. Most AG dolls that you are sewing for are made by Mattel, if a customer has a Pre Mattel doll they usually know it and know that they are a bit Chubbier. The Pre Mattel doll that we have doesn’t seem to be that much bigger, but most are. The LJC Patterns have been fitted to the Mia Doll’s measurements.

Here are a few updated charts with more indepth side by side measurements. First chart is for 18 inch dolls similar to American Girl body type and fit. (right click to save the image to print it out for future reference, or view larger on your home computer). We recommend using these measurements as a guide for determining which patterns might work for a doll you have that we don't specifically design pattern for. The illustration shows where each measurement has been taken. Err on the side of a bit larger and make modifications from that pattern.

This next chart shows several other types of dolls' measurements that we have specifically designed pattern for here at larougetdelisle. The shaded columns identify similarly sized dolls. These patterns may be a close fit for both dolls.
