Vendor: Thimbles and Acorns
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 7.99

As a result of the shocking events of the French Revolution, clothing trends become less aristocratic and more practical. Around 1799, as Napoleon rose to power, he rejected all customs associated with the old regimes. He hoped that France would, once again, become a fashion leader and halted the import of British textiles and revived French lace making. Women were forbidden to appear at court in the same dress more than twice and he encouraged a return to simplicity and the silhouettes displayed on the statues of ancient Greece and Rome. Napoleon’s wife, Empress Josephine, was a fashion icon and a trendsetter that completely upended the standards of fashion and ushered in the styles that would define what became known as the Empire Period in France, the Regency Period in Britain, and the Federalist Period in the Italy from about 1799 - 1820.

The Grecian Renaissance dress is based on a dress worn in a painting of the young Félicité Louise Julie Constance de Durfort that dates back to 1808. It is a simple empire waisted dress that is made from a lightweight sheer fabric for an almost ethereal look. To give it a little weight (and modesty) it is worn over a plain underdress that can be made in a matching or contrasting color. The dress is ankle length, so it can show off one’s pretty shoes and is edged at the bottom with two rows of ribbon that match the ribbon tie at the waistline. The Grecian style draped neckline is finished with a simple geometric embroidered edge. Short puffed sleeves and heavy gathers in back of the skirting give the otherwise understated silhouette a little added shape. Two small snaps in the back are used to fasten both the dress and underdress. As a finishing touch, instructions for a fringed shawl are included in the pattern.

Vendor: Thimbles and Acorns
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 6.99

During the Regency Era, foundation garments were essential to add stability opacity to the light and filmy dresses that were the fashion.

This three piece collection of Regency foundation garments includes a two-piece short wrap stay that is lightly boned in the front with narrow cording. The two pieces cross in the front and back and ties in the front making it easy to put on without assistance. The adjustable shoulder straps tie behind the shoulder.

The stays are worn over a simple sleeveless chemise that is well suited for dresses with a lower neckline and short or sheer sleeves. The neckline is easily adjustable with a drawstring neckline.

A pair of pantalettes made in the historical two-piece design finishes the set. These pantalettes were designed as an added layer for warmth and were made with two separate legs and an open crotch. Until this time, shifts were the only undergarments women and girls wore, so the open crotch was a comfortable step for them as this type of undergarment was introduced. The pantalettes tie on at the waistline and are finished with three rows of pintucks. At the beginning of the Regency Era, ladies were still uncomfortable with the idea of wearing anything that resembled a trouser so pantalettes were generally not embellished and worn short enough to be hidden under the skirts. Later in the Regency Era, as pantalettes became more accepted, they would be more embellished and worn slightly longer than the skirts so they would peek under the hemline.

This PDF sewing pattern, by Thimbles and Acorns, is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl® and Other Similarly Sized Dolls.

The work dress is a simple to construct dress that opens at the front. Worn mostly around the house doing as the name suggests, household chores. The dress has dropped shoulders, a simple gathered cuffed sleeve, and a fitted bodice. This dress has the option to either pleat or gather the skirt to the bodice. Instructions are also included to make a shorter present day version of this dress.

Vendor: Little Miss Muffett
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 5.99

Your 18-inch doll will look adorable in this beautiful historical-style Day Dress with its abundance of lace, together with a pretty Mop Cap from Little Miss Muffett. Although not historically accurate, the Annabelle Day Dress is similar to those worn during the late 1700’s to early 1800’s.

The Dress, which has a fully lined Bodice and closes a Center Back with Hook & Loop tape, has a wide, shallow neckline edged with gathered lace and an optional central bow or rose to finish. The long bell-shaped puff sleeves have gathered lace inserts at the bicep and narrow lace which finishes the hem edge. The full gathered skirt is constructed in three sections (which are great for contrasting fabric if desired); the upper section has wide twin tucks to add interest; wide gathered lace is inserted into to the upper section seam while the lower section has lace inserted into the lower center section seam as well as a lace edged hem.

The lace edged Mop Cap is lined, has an elastic casing to keep the cap firmly on the head, and is finished with a small front bow.

This fairly easy intermediate pattern is designed to fit 18-inch soft-bodied dolls such as American Girl® and is available exclusively from larougetdelisle.

      Vendor: Thimbles and Acorns
      Type: 18 Inch Historical
      Price: 9.99

The Victorian Era ushered in a new kind of freedom. Until this time, elaborate clothing had been reserved for the noble and the wealthy, but the industrial revolution had made fabrics and trims cheap, the sewing machine made sewing fast, and the development of synthetic dyes made it possible to create just about any color under the sun. All of this suddenly became available to the general public and whole new realm of elaborate dress design flourished and became available to the average woman.

The Literary Society dress is an example of a fashionable dress that would have been popular in the 1870s. This two-piece dress is cut in the fashionable silhouette of the time with a full back, higher waistline, sloped shoulders, and form fitted sleeves. The front of the skirt is finished with a ruched overlay that drapes over a ruffled hemline (the ruching is optional if a plain front is preferred). Five rows of ruffles accentuate the full skirt back. The ruffles and ruching can be edged with lace or left plain. The bodice features a built in underbodice with a high neckline that accentuates the low square-cut overbodice neckline. The square neckline can be finished with a ruffle for formal social events or left plain for casual outings such as a seaside adventure. The underbodice fastens in the back with a single button and loop closure and the overbodice fastens in back with two buttons and a snap at the waistline (hook and loop tape or snaps can be used, if preferred). The bodice waistline is defined by a narrow fabric band that sits just above the natural waistline and a series of drapes and aprons are hung from it to add the quintessential 1870s layering draping details. The sleeves of the bodice are fitted and can be finished with a plain hem or with a lace edge and side slit that creates an elegant flare at the wrist.

This dress can be worn by itself, but for the full effect it is recommended that it is worn over our Primrose Chemise and Lobster Tail Bustle.

This dress is easier to make than it looks, however it is rated as advanced because it requires you to pay close attention to the details in the instructions.

Fashion is where expression meets practicality and lures it into the realm of the extreme. Though fashion trends have a tendency to push the limits, practicality always manages to bring them back into balance... at least for a time. Full skirts were the hallmark of the early Victorian era and by the 1860s they had expanded to as wide as six feet in diameter. However, as railroads began forging paths around the world, women began to travel more and more. Full skirts and crinolines made for poor traveling companions and the boundary for this fashion trend had been reached. Still, it would be a gallant exit. The 1870s saw a great boom in the textile industry. Hand looms were replaced by more efficient steam driven power looms which resulted in a larger supply of cloth and fancy trims at greatly reduced prices. The great cage crinolines were shed and the surplus fabric from the full skirts was draped in elaborately decorated layers and pulled toward the back in large bustles that were reminiscent of those worn a century earlier. The fashionable silhouette had become smaller and more mobile.

Use this Lobster Tail style bustle to enhance your favorite 1870s style dress.  Pattern includes a bonus Petticoat!

This PDF pattern by Thimbles and Acorns is designed to fit 18-inch dolls such as American Girl®.

Suggested Fabrics:  Lobster Tail Bustle in quilting cotton, linen, lawn, or silk. Not suitable for knits. Petticoat in lightweight cotton, batiste, voile, lawn, and silk.

            Vendor: Flossie Potter
            Type: 18 Inch Historical
            Price: 4.99

Flossie Potter's "1800s Simple Stitches Heart Warmer & Snood" is the PDF sewing pattern with easy-to-make accessories for its companion pattern, the "1800s Simple Stitches Dress." Both are designed to fit 18-inch dolls such as American Girl®.

The Heart Warmer is made in one piece (no seams!) and is surrounded by fringe. The two front pieces cross over your doll's heart, being true to its name!

The Snood is similar to a hair net worn at the back of the head to keep long hair in place. Both of these pieces were quite popular in the 1800s, but they've been worn in other centuries as well, making them a good choice for most of your historical dresses.

Recommended Fabrics:  cotton mesh, light-weight loosely-woven fabric such as boucle

            Supplies Needed:

Heart Warmer: 1/3 yd light-weight and loosely-woven fabric such as an open-weave boucle or loomed crepe

Snood: 1/3 yd cotton mesh fabric (or cotton mesh vegetable bag)

            Vendor: Thimbles and Acorns
            Type: 18 Inch Historical
            Price: 8.99

This 1830s dress by Thimbles and Acorns  features beret sleeves which are cut from a full circle of cloth. The wide flat appearance of the sleeves gives the illusion of broad sloping shoulders which defined the fashionable silhouette of the Romantic Era.

Sleeves can be made plain or topped with a decorative sleeve cap which further accentuates the slope of the shoulders. You can choose a simple flat bodice style or one with added fullness that is caught up in pleats or shirring at the shoulders.

The neckline can be left plain, outlined with a narrow lace edging, or finished with an elegant draped lace trim. The skirting is neatly pleated into the waistband and features a padded hem that can be made from a simple band or decorative overlay to enhance the fullness and elegance of the skirt.

The dress closes in the back with three buttons along the bodice and a snap at the waistband. Snaps or hook and loop tape can be used instead of buttons if preferred. As a finishing touch, a double-wrapped sash is tied at the waist to pull all the Romantic details together.
