Vendor: Thimbles and Acorns
Type: 18 Inch Historical

World War I and the Women's Suffrage Movement heavily influenced women's fashions between 1914 and 1920. As men went off to fight, women took on jobs formerly filled by men and a new image of freedom and self respect was embraced by women. By 1914, women's clothing had lost the rigid, tailored lines of the Edwardian period and gave way to softer more comfortable fashions. Skirts became shorter and colors became more somber as they often do during wartime.
The Bowling Pin dress emerged as a way to add subtle feminine curves at the hip line with minimal fabric and without the need of confining corsets. This design by Thimbles and Acorns features a loose fitting bodice with a dropped two layer center inset. A little fullness is gathered into the front waistline of the bodice to add a little shape. The low hanging shawl collar gives it a relaxed appearance with a slight flare at the ends for a bit of panache. Simple ¾ length sleeves give the dress a finished look without detracting from the key design details. The calf-length dress is full at the waistline and tapers down to the hemline to give it the “bowling pin” shape. Banded pockets are optional. The dress fastens in the back with three buttons, but hook and loop tape or snaps can be used if preferred. A simple sash with artsy double-knotted ends defines the waistline and accentuates the collar and pocket details.
This PDF sewing pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.
Recommended Fabrics: Dress and Dress Contrast in light to mid weight cotton, linen, lawn, dotted Swiss, voile, or silk. Not suitable for knits. Sash in lightweight cotton, synthetic lining, silk, crepe, gauze, or chiffon.

Travel back in time with this darling 1920s style Nautical Dress, by Keepers Dolly Duds. The dress features a loose fitting dropped waist bodice, knee length box pleated skirt, and elbow length sleeves. The dress opens all the way in back for easy dressing and is fastened with five working buttons; hook and loop tape or snaps can be used, if preferred. For added interest, the skirting and sleeves are hemmed with decorative stitching, the sleeves are embellished with dainty fabric bows, and two decorative buttons secure the faux front closure. A smart looking tie at the base of the collar finishes the outfit like an exclamation point.

Vendor: Flossie Potter
Type: 18 Inch Historical

"Central Park, 1904", by Flossie Potter, is a dress that might have been worn by a well-to-do little girl as she rode in the family's elegant carriage along Central Park's driving park or strolled its promenade with her mama and papa.
The style of the dress is reminiscent of the early 1900s with its slightly dropped waistline, straight long sleeves, and pleated skirt which falls just below the knees.
The featured design element is the dress's front and back overlays that begin from the shoulder and end with vertical, pointed "straps." The overlays support a ribbon "belt" that ties in the back.
The angled front neckline with overlapping front bodice pieces creates the illusion that the dress can be opened in front, but it actually closes in the back.
This one-size PDF sewing pattern was created to accommodate both modern 18" dolls such as American Girl(R) as well as their vintage dolls. The 45-page pattern contains 25 pages of instruction with full-color photo assembly illustrations, 6 pages of summary instructions (to save on printer ink!) and 9 pages of pattern pieces.
So hurry and get started on creating your own "Central Park, 1904" heirloom!

Create charming 1930's era dresses with two distinct bodice variations for your 18" doll with this beautifully designed Keepers Dolly Duds pattern.
View A is a sweetie of a dress with an asymmetrical bodice that sweeps down below the waistline for an interesting visual effect. It sports a rounded collar and short puffy sleeves and has side ties that form a pretty bow in the back. Crisp pleats in the front and gathers in the back of the skirting very in keeping with a 1930's style but overall these dresses are classic and timeless.
View B is sharply styled with an off center front bodice that extends over the shoulder fastened down with three mini buttons. The rounded collar, tulip sleeves, and a smart looking belt complete the look.
As an added BONUS, I've offered a long sleeve option for either dress. The dress can be made without pleats by opting to gather the skirting. Have fun mixing and matching up the details with this pattern.

This stylish dress by Dollhouse Designs was inspired by the stories of the 1930s and ‘40s historical American Girl® dolls and their love of a good mystery. The delightful Nancy Drew book series that began in 1930, and -with changes- is still inspiring young girls today as “Girl Detective”.
I imagine that Nancy Drew’s plucky intelligence was an influence on many
young girls through the years, including this designer. As a child, I gloried in finding mysteries about the house to solve!
The 1930s & ‘40s was also a celebrated style period that featured very structured
tailoring. I have tried to capture that look in this design.
Use lightweight fabrics to construct the dress. Trims can be added easily at neckline, sleeves, and the waistband. While the gathering might look tricky, the shaped pattern pieces create the unique look of this style. This is an Experienced-Basic level pattern (someone who has sewn a few items before). Clear instruction & images guide you through each step.
Recommended Fabrics: Dress – Lightweight Woven – Cotton & Cotton Blends up to quilting weight. Lining – Very lightweight cotton or silky lining fabrics are ideal. Contrast– Same as Dress fabrics.
