Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 6.99

Back in the late 1870s Britain was fueled by coal. Steam trains used coal to power train engines, and the man who shoveled the coal into the furnace wore a one-piece garment as that was safer than wearing separate pants and a shirt – as an all in one garment was much less likely to get caught on all the levers and hooks in the driver’s cab. Large municipal and office buildings all had boiler rooms, where men loaded coal into furnaces that boiled water for the hot water and heating the building.

The boiler suit was practical. Roomy and made of lightweight but robust fabric, it could be worn on top of regular clothing if necessary, and was suitable to be worn for indoor or outdoor work. This practical cover-all-garment was soon adopted by all sorts of workmen to keep regular clothing clean while doing jobs that could be messy: mechanics, painters and decorators, plumbers, and all sorts of manual workers adopted the boiler suit as an unofficial uniform. Amateurs adopted this garment for their DIY (Do It Yourself) jobs at home. Later, when air planes came along, the boiler suit became the basis of the flight suit design – simple, practical and comfortable.

Just over one hundred years later, this humble workman’s garment was hijacked by the fashion industry and turned into a wardrobe staple for the 1980s boy or girl about town. Boiler suits were made from fun fabrics – florals or abstracts, in bright and in pastel colors as well as the more traditional khaki, navy, black or white. Accessories like tie belts were added, along with chunky bead necklaces (for both boys and girls), or a bandana at the neckline.

The boiler suit in this pattern is inspired by the traditional workman’s cover-all outfit. It has a back yoke with a hanging loop and a pleated back bodice to allow for movement during work activities. It features back pants patch pockets and a breast pocket. The front is cut in one piece and fastens with buttons or hook and loop tape. There is a casing at the waist, suitable for a tie belt or for a more formal belt style. A paracord clip can be added to the belt to give a more military look if preferred. There’s a choice of sleeves: long tapered sleeves, or mock rolled sleeves with a button tab.

Whether your doll plans to work as a mechanic in the car workshop, or is off to the 1980s themed disco party, this pattern is sure to be a much-loved outfit!

This PDF sewing pattern, by Genniewren Designs, is designed to fit 18 inch dolls such as American Girl®.

Recommended Fabrics:  This pattern is designed for woven fabrics. The boiler suit should be made from light to medium weight woven fabric such as cotton poplin, broadcloth, quilter's cottons, chambray or lightweight denim. This pattern is not suitable for heavy denim such as jeans fabric.

Supplies Needed:

  • For either sleeve option, half a yard/meter of 44”/115cm wide fabric.
  • For the two color version half a yard/meter of 44”/115cm wide fabric for the main part and a quarter of a yard/meter of similar width and weight contrast fabric.
  • For all versions, a quarter of a yard/meter of lightweight fusible interfacing.
  • Three small (e.g. 3/8”/8-9mm) buttons for the front closure, plus two matching buttons for the sleeve tab option.
  • Hook and loop tape for the front closure, or 3 sew on snaps.
  • 28”/71cm of 3/8”-1/2”/9-12mm wide ribbon or braid for the ribbon belt option.
  • 1 paracord clip or similar buckle, and 6 1/2”/16.5cm of 3/8”/9mm-1cm wide elastic for the fabric belt option.

NOTIONS AND TOOLS YOU MIGHT FIND USEFUL

  • A silk organza pressing cloth to protect your fabric from iron marks. Silk organza is almost transparent, so you can see everything is correctly positioned before pressing. If you cannot get a silk organza pressing cloth, then a 100% cotton cloth will be adequate for protecting your fabric.
  • A mini iron for getting into those tiny areas when pressing the seams on your dolls’ clothes. These can be found in most quilt stores, or online.
  • A sleeve board is ideal for pressing doll’s clothes rather than using a standard size ironing board. A mini tailor’s ham and sleeve roll will also help. If you do not have a sleeve roll, you can use a rolled up terry washcloth instead.
  • Tailor’s chalk, chalk pencil, dressmaker’s carbon paper, washable or air dry marker pens for transferring pattern markings to the wrong side of your fabric.
  • Fray blocking fluid for sealing seams and edges.
  • Loop turner or hemostats for turning the back loop and belt.
  • A bodkin or small safety pin for threading the belt or elastic through the waist casing.
  • A zipper foot for sewing around bulky areas.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 8.99

This pattern by Genniewren Designs, is an 18" doll-sized recreation of the Naval Commander's full dress uniform worn by Prince Charles on his wedding day back in 1981.

The pattern includes a frock coat with a cutaway front skirt, slim-fitting military style pants, and several accessories: a ribbon sash, white gloves, a belt, aiguillettes and a sword. Two styles of gloves have been included to fit most shapes of doll hands. The uniform look is completed with a navy and white cap, made from the Military Style Cover pattern which is published separately.

The fully lined frock coat has a slightly extended shoulder line supported with shoulder pads, contrast epaulettes and a contrast collar. It features an asymmetric front fastened with snaps. The coat back bodice is sewn in three parts for a traditionally tailored look. The coat skirt is pleated and vented at the center back and has mock pocket flaps at the side back. Shiny brass buttons provide the military flair required for a prince's uniform.

The matching belt features two lines of gold braid, and a large shiny button used as a decorative buckle. The sword is attached to the belt using gold braid and cords.
The slim-fitting pants are military style with a faced waist instead of a separate waistband, a front fastening fly front, and gold braid on the side seams. The fit is enhanced by darts at the back waist.

The sash is made from ribbon and features a bow and a small medallion. The medals are created from ribbon and sequins or stamp tags.
The aiguillettes are made from two different sizes of gold cord, and the conical aiguille ends are created out of gold foil.

The sword is crafted from wood, flexible plastic, wire, beads, foil and vinyl or felt and features gold braid to represent the figured molding on the scabbard.

This pattern includes hand embroidery designs for the wings and the two patches on the front of the coat. A set of machine embroidery designs for these is also available.
Information is included to help with sourcing trims and other supplies needed to complete the items in the pattern.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 4.99

The Royal Wedding 1981 - Diana's Bouquet craft pattern is designed to help you recreate a scaled-down 18" doll-sized version of Lady Diana Spencer's wedding bouquet.

The pattern features step by step photo instructions and very clear diagrams explaining how to build a bouquet from scratch, using a small plastic funnel as a posy holder.

The bouquet is built using mini silk and plastic flowers 1.25" (3cm) or smaller, and appropriately sized greenery. Templates are included for creating flowers and leaves from your own fabric, and the pattern also features instructions for cutting down larger silk flowers and leaves to create smaller versions more appropriate for doll scale projects.

Also included is some historical information giving details of the original bouquet, and the Victorian floriographical meanings of the flowers and greenery chosen by Diana for her wedding day.

This PDF crafting pattern by Genniewren Designs, is designed for use with 18" dolls such as American Girl®.

Supplies Needed:

MATERIALS REQUIRED

  • One small plastic perfume funnel approximately 2 1/2"/6cm tall and 2 1/8"/5.5cm diameter at the top edge;
  • A 1.5"/3.5cm cube of Oasis dry flower arranging foam (not the green one used for fresh flowers) OR 75g of air drying clay;
  • One small button ⅜"/9mm diameter (dry foam option only);
  • 1 package (approx 25) of 26 Gauge or 30 Gauge green wrapped florist wires (or if you prefer you can use the paper wrapped florist wire from a spool);
  • 1 reel of ½"/1.3cm wide green florist tape
  • Strong sewing thread, beading wire or fine monofilament fishing line;
  • 25 – 30 small silk or paper flowers 1¼"/3cm or smaller, OR a similar number of larger flowers that you can cut down to size, OR you can make flowers from fabric using the templates provided;
  • Silk and plastic leaves of a similar size to the flowers (you can cut down larger ones);
  • 1 package of size 6.0 seed beads (for the centers of reconstructed and hand made flowers)
  • Fray blocking fluid
  • Clear-drying PVA craft glue,
  • Fast-drying glue (hot glue is acceptable);
  • Permanent markers for drawing veins etc. on the flowers and leaves;
  • 14"/35cm of 2"/5cm wide white or ivory lace;
  • 2 clear elastic hair bands (to enable your doll to "hold" the bouquet);
  • Around 8"/20cm of ½"/1.2cm white or ivory ribbon or Fold Over Elastic (FOE).
  • If you prefer to make the flowers and/or leaves yourself then you will need small pieces (4" x 4"/ 20cm square) suitably colored fabric scraps. I used scraps of quilting cottons, ripstop nylon, organza and chiffon.

TOOLS YOU WILL NEED

  • Craft scissors (please do not use your good sewing scissors, even for cutting down larger silk flowers as they may have been treated with stiffeners etc.);
  • A craft knife for carving the dry florist foam;
  • A sharp No 2 (HB) pencil to trace the flower shapes onto your fabric;
  • Small sharp scissors for cutting fabric;
  • An awl for piercing holes in the center of the fabric flowers (or you can use sharp scissors)
  • Wire cutters;
  • Snipe nosed jewellery pliers;
  • Quilters' template plastic or thin clear plastic to trace the pattern templates (or you could use cardstock if you prefer);
  • A small diameter knitting needle (US size 1 or size 0) or a large sewing pin.
  • If you are using air dry clay you will also need a pill pot with a flexible plastic lid that you can cut a hole in, or a shot glass to balance the bouquet in while you are working on it.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 8.99

This pattern by Genniewren Designs, is an 18-inch doll-sized recreation of the iconic wedding dress worn by Lady Diana Spencer on her wedding day back in 1981.

The dress features a paneled bodice with a lace overlay in the center front and back. The bodice seams are highlighted with lace trim. The dress has a scooped neckline with a lace and fabric double ruffle, large puffed sleeves featuring a deep double ruffle of fabric and lace at the cuffs, and a full gathered skirt. The neckline and sleeve cuffs feature matching fabric bows.

The detachable train is 44" (112cm) long. Like the original wedding dress, the train features three panels. The panel seams are highlighted with lace. The train is gathered into a waistband, and edged all round with lace.

A separate circular tulle petticoat emphasizes the fullness of the skirt without the bulk of hoops.

The veil consists of three layers: a long "train" veil edged in lace, a short, shoulder-length veil at the back, and a blusher veil at the front. The veils are attached to a ribbon band that fixes to the doll's hair with small combs or clips. The cover photograph shows the veil worn with a purchased metal doll-size tiara.

Be sure to check out the companion Royal Wedding 1981 patterns to find Diana's Bouquet, The Groom, and a Machine Embroidery Design Set for the Groom's uniform.

FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS:  The dress should be made from medium weight woven satin or taffeta fabric. I recommend crepe backed satin as it is a lot more forgiving than the less expensive satins due to the weave. Illusion net or tulle veiling is recommended for the veil. Fashion net or tulle is recommended for the petticoat.

Supplies Needed:

Dress and train:

  • 1.75 yards (1.5 meters) of 44" (112cm) wide taffeta or crepe-backed satin fabric;
  • 1.75 yards (1.5 meters) of 44" (112cm) wide lining fabric (I recommend lightweight cotton or polycotton lawn); OR you can separate this out to ¼ yard (0.25 meter) of cotton or polycotton lawn for the bodice lining and 22" x 44" (58cm x 112cm) of silky lining fabric for the train lining;
  • 1.5 yards (1.4 meters) of 4" (10cm) wide embroidered tulle/net lace for the neckline and sleeve ruffles;
  • Approximately 15" x 8" (38cm x 20cm) of lace fabric for the center front and center back panel overlays (depending on the size of the lace pattern repeat you may need extra fabric to fussy cut matching sections);
  • 3.5 yards (3 meters) of 1/4" – 3/8" (6mm – 9mm) wide lace trim for emphasizing bodice and train panel seams;
  • 4 yards (3.6 meters) of 1/2" (1.2cm) wide guipure/Venise lace for edging the skirt hem and the train edge;
  • 1 yard (1 meter) of 1/2" (1.2cm) wide insertion-style lace for the waistline and cuffs;
  • Four small snaps approximately 1/4" – 3/8" (6mm – 9mm) diameter. I prefer to use the square nylon heirloom snaps as they are less visible when the train is removed from the dress;
  • One invisible zipper at least 13" (33cm) long.

Petticoat:

  • 3 yards (2.8 meters) of 28" (72cm) wide tulle or soft netting fabric cut into 4 x 27" (69cm) squares;
  • 10" (25cm) of 1" (25cm) wide organza or lightweight satin ribbon;
  • 14" x 2" ( 36cm x 5cm) lining fabric for the waistband;
  • 2.25 yards (2 meters) of narrow 1/4" – 3/8" (6mm – 9mm) wide lace to edge the hem edge of the top layer of the petticoat.

Veils:

  • 1.5 yards (1.5 meters) of 44" (112cm) wide lightweight tulle veiling or illusion veiling;
  • 2.5 yards (2.25 meters) of ½" (1.2cm) wide guipure/Venise lace for edging the long veil;
  • 5.5" (14cm) lightweight satin ribbon or organza ribbon;
  • 2 doll sized hair combs or sprung/alligator hair clips approximately 1" – 1.25" (2.5cm – 3.5cm) to secure the veil to the doll's hair.

Combined trimming requirements:
If you wish to have all the narrow trims matching then you will need to purchase:

  • 10.5 yards (9.5 meters) of ½" (1.2cm) wide guipure/Venise lace for the skirt hem, train edge and long veil trim;
  • 5.75 yards (5.25 meters) of ¼" – ⅜" (6mm – 9mm) wide lace for emphasizing the bodice and train panel seams and edging the top layer of the tulle petticoat;
  • 2 yards (1.8 meters) of 8" (20cm) wide embroidered tulle lace for the center front and back panels, neckline and sleeve ruffles;
  • 1 yard (1 meter) of ½" (1.2cm) wide insertion-style lace for the waistline and cuffs.
  • You will also need a purchased doll tiara to complete the original historical look, as Lady Diana Spencer wore her family tiara on her wedding day.

NOTIONS AND TOOLS YOU MIGHT FIND USEFUL

  • A pressing cloth is necessary to prevent shine spots on your fabric when pressing bulky seams. I use a silk organza pressing cloth as it is semi-transparent and allows me to check alignments of seam allowances, hems, etc. before pressing.
  • A mini iron is useful for getting into those tiny areas when pressing the seams on dolls' clothes. These can be found in most quilt stores, or online.
  • A sleeve board is ideal for pressing dolls' clothes rather than using a standard size ironing board. A mini tailor’s ham and sleeve roll will also help. If you do not have a small sleeve roll, you can use a tightly rolled washcloth inserted into the sleeves when pressing the seam allowances open.
  • Tailor’s chalk, chalk pencil, dressmaker’s carbon paper, washable or air dry marker pens for transferring pattern markings to the wrong side of your fabric.
  • Fray blocking fluid.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 6.99

In Britain, back in February 1981, a 19 year old girl became engaged to a Queen's first born son. Almost overnight, that young girl became a world wide "megastar" who appeared daily in every newspaper and on every TV news bulletin. She was photographed at nearly every moment of her life and her clothing was analyzed in great detail. Her love of ruffles, frills, lace etc caused designers and clothing stores to try and replicate Shy Di's romantic sense of fashion. Five months later that young girl married her prince and became a real life princess.

This pattern by Genniewren Designs is a nod to Shy Di's outfits from the early 1980s. The pattern contains a tuck-fronted poet shirt with a bound neckline that can be made with or without the ruffled collar. The collar can be made from the shirt fabric, from eyelet trim or from lace. The shirt has a rounded dropped shoulder line, common to men's shirts from the 18th century to the end of the 19th century, and full sleeves finishing in an elasticized ruffled edge. The shirt's blouson style is created by an elasticized waistline, which is optional. The shirt fastens at the center back.
The simple A-line midi-length skirt features a box pleat at the center front, and pockets hidden in the side seams. The back of the skirt waistband is elasticized for easy fit.
A vest (known as a waistcoat in Britain) completes the ensemble. The lined vest can be made reversible for more versatility, or it can be made from pre-quilted fabric.
When worn together, this ensemble embodies the fashions popular in early 1980s Britain, but each of the items in this pattern is versatile and can be worn with other clothing to give a more modern look. The skirt is a wardrobe staple and will be useful for all sorts of projects; the shirt looks great when worn with jeans, and the vest is another quick and easy to sew item that has all sorts of uses. This pattern will definitely become a favorite for your doll, whether she is channeling her inner 1980s New Romantic, or just enjoying some easy to wear fashion items. What's not to like?

This PDF sewing pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.

Recommended Fabrics: This pattern is designed for woven fabrics. The shirt should be made from lightweight woven fabric such as cotton lawn, batiste, cotton poplin, or light, soft polycotton blend fabrics. Medium weight woven fabrics such as quilter's cottons are perfect for the skirt. The vest can be made from the same fabric as the skirt, with a contrast lining. It can also be made from pre-quilted fabric. You can also quilt your own fabric to match the skirt if you prefer.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: Knitting
Price: 5.99

The Daisy Stitch Jacket, by Genniewren Designs, is a versatile short outdoor coat that's perfect for your 18” dolls.

The jacket is knitted from the bottom up, with separate sewn in sleeves. The button and buttonhole bands are picked up and knitted along the front edges and the neck is finished with a knitted collar, or a hood – your choice!

There are no complex color-work techniques used in this pattern. The daisy knit stitch pattern is worked in simple stripes, with two rows in each color. The jacket examples have been knitted in three colors, and the row by row instructions reflect this, but the jacket could just as easily be worked in two colors, four colors, or even a plain single color with just a couple of colored pattern repeats at the lower edges of the hem and sleeves if you prefer. It's your jacket, so knit it your way!

The daisy stitch pattern gives a crunchy texture to the jacket that looks a little like crochet. Although the stitch may look complicated it is relatively easy and quick to knit. The pattern includes an optional headband so that you can practice the stitch and make something for your doll before you start to knit the jacket.

The pattern is written line by line with photo instructions for confident beginners, and includes a line by line summary without photos for printing.

This PDF knitting pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.

This versatile shrug is sure to please your doll. It's a fun, modern-style fashion accessory that's perfect to wear on a trip to London.

Bayswater is a cosmopolitan area of London that includes the famous Kensington Gardens, home of the Princess Diana Memorial and the statue of Peter Pan. At the time of the Domesday Book (in the 11th Century), Bayswater was a completely rural area that belonged to Baynard, the Abbot of Westminster. The name Bayswater is said to come from Baynard's Watering Place. The water source, known as the West Bourne, is still celebrated today in the tube station and street names Westbourne Grove, and Westbourne Terrace.

After the creation of Hyde Park and Kensington Gardens in the early 1800s Bayswater quickly became extremely fashionable when London's businessmen started to commission large garden villas for their families.
Featuring broad streets lined with white stucco-fronted town houses, narrow, cobblestone mews terraces, green tree-lined squares and the famous Portobello Road Market, Bayswater is also home to some major religious buildings of interest including the first Synagogue in London built in 1879, and London's first Greek Orthodox Cathedral.
Bayswater has some interesting other "firsts" too: it was home to Britain's first ever department store in 1911, and also to our first ever coin-operated laundry which opened its doors in 1949!
Nowadays Bayswater is a thriving, multicultural district featuring many fashionable shops, hotels, tourist attractions and restaurants, all celebrating Britain's diverse history and culture, and featuring foods from all parts of the world. It's a fascinating place to explore on a visit to Old London Town.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: A Girl For All Time
Price: 5.99

The Cables and Lace dress pattern, by Genniewren Designs, includes a dress, and a shorter version of the dress that makes a great sweater or cardigan. A matching hat is included as a bonus.

The dress or sweater is knitted from the neck down and fastens down the center back with buttons and buttonholes. The dress and sweater can also be worn with the buttons at the front if you prefer. There is a choice of cap sleeves, puffed sleeves or elbow length straight sleeves. The button bands are knitted in with the dress, so there’s very little to sew together with this pattern, just the sleeve seams (if you are making one of the options with sleeves). After that, all you need to do is darn in the yarn tail and sew on the buttons.

The stitch pattern for this dress is inspired by Japanese knitting patterns. Japanese knitting is known for its delicate and intricate-looking patterns usually combining lace stitches and cables or textured stitches. Although this may sound complex, it isn't really. The stitch patterns contain repeated rows and are built up of blocks of elements to create a pattern that, while looking complex, is actually fairly easy to understand.

This versatile pattern is sure to please your doll. The dress is a fun, modern style dress that’s perfect for most occasions. The sweater can be worn with other clothing in your doll’s wardrobe and the hat is perfect as a fashion accessory for all sorts of outfits.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: Knitting
Price: 4.99

The West Acre Sweater, by Genniewren Designs, is a versatile all-year-round sweater for your 18” dolls. It can be worn as a sweater with the buttons at the back or with the buttons at the front as a cardigan.

The long-line sweater is perfect for fall and winter when knitted in snuggly woolen yarns, and perfect for spring or cool summer evenings when knitted in cotton style yarn.

The sweater has two length options, the long line sweater is just perfect for boys, or for outside activities on sporting occasions, while the shorter version is more feminine and goes perfectly with skirts or pants for school or a fun day out with your best friends.

West Acre is an area of Harrow Hill, where I grew up. The famous Harrow School has a school house on West Acre, which is surrounded by green fields for cricket, rugby and football among other sports. This sweater pattern is reminiscent of the navy blue woolen sweaters worn by some of the school boys in the fall and winter. In the summer, white cotton sweaters were slung over their shoulders with the sleeves knotted about their necks.

This sweater is knitted in stockinette stitch. The sleeves are knitted first. Then the bodice of the sweater is worked in one piece up to the armholes. Next the sleeves are joined in and the raglan yoke is created by decorative decreases. The sweater is finished off with a single rib neckline. The only sewing to do is the sleeve seams and the buttons on the back.

The required gauge for this pattern is 17 stitches and 21 rows to 2" x 2" (5cm x 5cm).

This pattern contains illustrated row-by-row instructions, a printable row-by-row summary without photos, and a one page truncated summary suitable for advanced knitters. You choose which pattern instructions you want to print.

This PDF knitting pattern is designed to fit 18 inch dolls such as American Girl®.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: Knitting
Price: 4.99

The Chantelle Round Yoke Cardigan, by Genniewren Designs, is the perfect versatile cardigan for your 18” dolls. The cardigan can even be worn with the buttons at the back to look like a sweater!
It features a pretty round yoke with a chevron lace pattern, garter stitch borders, an optional lace or textured pattern for the hem edge, and a choice of three different sleeve styles.
The Chantelle Cardigan is knitted from the top down. The round yoke cleverly uses the increased stitch count to create lace chevrons. From the yoke onwards, the pattern is worked in one piece until you get to the sleeves. From a construction perspective, this cardigan has less sewing to do than a more traditionally knitted sweater, as only the sleeves are seamed.
The pattern has a choice of three sleeve types: long straight sleeves, short straight sleeves and short puffed sleeves. All the sleeve options have a garter stitch band at the lower edge.
The options for the sleeves and hem edge patterns can be mixed, so you are sure to love the versatility of this pattern and use it again and again to create a variety of sweaters and cardigans for your favorite 18” doll.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: Knitting

After that, all you need to do is darn in the yarn tails and sew on the buttons.

Type: 18 Inch Modern
Price: 5.99

Rosemary and Redcurrant are two cute lambs who make delightful farmyard pets for your 18" dolls. They would also be perfect for your School Nativity play, or Welsh or Highland scenes.

The lambs made from this pattern, by Genniewren Designs, are approximately 7½" tall and 11" long from tip of the nose to tip of the tail. There may be slight variations depending on the stretchiness of your chosen fabric and how you fill the toy.

Rosemary is a simple lamb, whose body is made with a single color of Sherpa-style fleece. She has contrasting hooves and her inner ears are lined with contrasting 1/16" (3mm) short pile fleece fabric, or you could use flesh-colored satin for her ear linings instead. The Sherpa-style fleece pile can be gently clipped to give her face a little more definition.

Redcurrant is a more complex creature. He is designed to be more realistic. His body and head are made from the same type of Sherpa-style fleece as Rosemary, but he has a face and lower legs cut from contrasting 1/16" (3mm) short pile fleece fabric, as well as contrasting hooves and ear linings.

Both lambs have a cute little tail, and a nose embroidered from pink floss.
The heads and bodies are the same size so that you can mix and match them to create a unique lamb should you wish to do so.

Rosemary is suitable for beginner toymakers. Redcurrant is suitable for more confident toymakers as the two-colored lamb has more seams including inset curves.

Why Rosemary and Redcurrant? Traditionally rosemary is the herb used when cooking roast lamb; while redcurrant sauce is served on the side!

Recommended Fabrics: Rosemary (the simple one-colored lamb) is designed for Sherpa-style fleece, mock sheepskin fur fabric, or textured shaggy long pile cuddle plush-style fabric such as rose swirl plush (aka Shannon Cuddle Plush® or Minky®) for the head and body; with 3mm pile plush fabric for the hooves. Redcurrant (the two-colored lamb) is designed to use Sherpa-style fleece, mock sheepskin fur fabric, or textured shaggy plush for the main body and head; with 3mm cuddle plush for the face, legs and hooves. If you use Sherpa-style fleece or mock sheepskin fur fabric, there are several different types. Please make sure that the kind you buy has a knitted or woven background, not a suede-type background. The suede backed fabric is not suitable for toymaking as it has glue between the two layers of fabric that may damage your sewing machine and it is very hard to sew by hand, even with a specialist needle designed for sewing leather. If your plush fabric frays or the backing ravels easily, then you will find it helpful to apply fusible interfacing to the back of the fabric before cutting out and sewing the lamb. The ears of both lambs can be lined with matching or contrasting 3mm pile plush fabric, or you can use flesh-colored quilter's cotton or satin fabric if you prefer.

Supplies Needed:
MATERIALS REQUIRED
Rosemary – simple one-colored lamb
- 22" x 15" of Sherpa-style fleece fabric or mock sheepskin fur fabric.
- 22" x 3" of 3mm short pile plush fabric.
- 5" x 3" cream or flesh-colored short pile plush fabric or satin.
Redcurrant – two-colored lamb
- 22" x 11" of Sherpa-style fleece or mock sheepskin fur fabric.
- 22" x 6" of 3mm short pile plush fabric.
- 22" x 3" of 3mm short pile plush fabric.
- 5" x 3" cream or flesh-colored short pile plush fabric or satin.
Plus you will need the following for either lamb:
- 8 oz (250 gram) of polyester fiberfill toy filling.
- 2 x 0.25" (6mm) safety toy eyes for each lamb (so you will need four eyes if you are making both lambs). If you cannot find safety eyes, then you can use felt dots for the eyes. If the lamb is not a toy for a child then you could also use small black buttons for the eyes.
- Extra strong thread for attaching the head to the body.
- Approximately half a yard of ribbon to tie around the finished lamb's neck.

NOTIONS AND TOOLS YOU WILL FIND HELPFUL
- Fray stopping fluid.
- Chopstick or blunt-ended knitting needle for turning and stuffing.
- A circular needle will be helpful for attaching the head.
- Teazel brush, or blunt ended tapestry needle for easing trapped fur pile out of the seams.
- Long dollmaker’s needle for sculpting the facial features and embroidering the nose and mouth.

Skill Level:  Two options: Easy (Rosemary), Intermediate (Redcurrant)

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: A Girl For All Time
Price: 8.99

Wedding Day 1978, by Genniewren Designs, is a bridal pattern based on a photograph of a dress featured in a British sewing magazine, published in, you guessed it… 1978!

The princess line, panelled dress is simple, yet elegant. It is fully lined and features a scoop neckline, long sleeves, and a center back invisible zipper. There is a brush train for a bride and a straight hem version for the bridesmaid.

What gives this pattern its charm is the lace cape overlay.

For the bride, the long lace cape gives the effect of a train from the shoulders. The cape is edged in lace and has ruching at the front for ease of movement. The center back closes with buttons to the mid point, and thereafter the lace is seamed together. A shorter option of the cape is included for the bridesmaid's dress. This is a less "fabric-hungry" version that would be equally charming for the bride.

The original magazine photographs did not show a veil. The bride wore her hair in a bun and tucked flowers into her hair at the back and sides. It was noted that a veil would take away from the dramatic train effect of the lace cape.

The Juliet-style cap headdress is era-appropriate. Juliet caps were a 1970s fashion staple and were worn casually as well as for formal and bridal occasions, depending on the fabrics used and the trim and decoration applied. The Juliet-cap style headdress included in this pattern features an inner frame made from buckram or pelmet-weight home dec sew-in interfacing. The outer covering of the cap is the fabric left over from making the dress, but you could add a lace layer on top if you wished. The cap is made from one pattern piece, with darts at the back and sides to enable the cap to fit without a wire edging. The cap is edged in lace, and fabric flowers are attached to the back.

As a bonus feature, this pattern also includes a guide to working with lace fabrics, including information about different types of lace and a tutorial section on seam options and finishes for lace or sheer garments.

Special Note - This pattern is designed to fit A Girl For All Time® Dolls specifically and will not fit the standard 18 inch doll such as American Girl® Doll. An AGAT doll is 16 inches tall and has a slimmer hard plastic body. You can see more info on our Doll Measurements page.

Please see our other listings to make this dress for  American Girl®  dolls.

Recommended Fabrics:  - The dress is designed for medium-weight bridal or evening-wear fabrics, such as crepe-backed satin, shantung silk, taffeta, silk dupioni or brocade. - Cotton lawn, batiste, or a fine woven polyester/cotton blend fabric is suggested for the lining. - The cape is designed for all-over lace fabric. A small motif pattern works best for dolls. You may wish to "fussy cut" lace fabric with a larger motif, but you will need extra fabric to match any obvious patterns. - Venise lace trim is recommended to edge the lace cape and the Juliet-style cap. - You will also need buckram or home decor heavyweight non-fusible interfacing for the shell of the cap.

Supplies Needed:
- 3/4 yard of 44" wide satin fabric for the dress with the train, OR 1/2 a yard of 44" wide main fabric for the straight hem option dress.
- 3/4 yard of 44" wide lining fabric for the dress with the train, OR 1/2 a yard of 44" wide lining fabric for the straight hem option dress.
- 2 yards of 18" wide or wider all-over lace fabric for the bride's cape, or 11" x 30" for the bridesmaid's cape.
- The Juliet-style cap can be cut from the leftover fabrics used for the dress. If you are making the cap separately, you will need 7" x 10" pieces of main fabric and lining fabric.
- A 12" or longer invisible zipper for the back closure of the dress.
- 9 small (1/4" – 3/8", 6-8 mm) shank style buttons for the bride's cape, OR 11 buttons for the bridesmaid's cape.
- Venise lace trim – 4 yards for the bride's cape and cap; 2 yards is sufficient for the bridesmaid's cape and cap.
- Small fabric flowers for decorating the back of the cap.
- 7" x 10" buckram or home decor heavyweight sew-in (non-fusible) interfacing for the cap shell.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: A Girl For All Time
Price: 6.99

The Jazz dress knitting pattern, by Genniewren Designs, includes a dress with a choice of hem finishes, a sweater, a hip-length tunic sweater and a skirt.

The cap sleeved dress or sweater is knitted from the neck down with the yoke shaping hidden in the lace sections until the armholes. Thereafter the reverse stockinette stitch sections contain the increases and decreases that give the slim fitted shape to the dress and sweater.

The dress fastens down the center back with buttons and buttonholes. The skirt can be worn with the buttons at the front, or at the back to give a different look.
The button bands are knitted in with the dress, so there’s nothing to sew together with this pattern, the only sewing you need to do is darning in the yarn tails and sewing on the buttons.

The lacey stitch pattern is created with a four row pattern repeat. The dress, sweaters and skirt are each knitted all in one piece, on a circular needle, or on a pair of straight needles, whichever you prefer to use.

There are no complicated stitches used in this pattern, just knit, purl, yarn over, and knitting or purling two stitches together.

This versatile pattern is sure to please your doll. The dress is a fun, modern style dress that’s perfect for most occasions. The sweaters and skirt can be mixed and matched with other clothing in your doll’s wardrobe.

This PDF knitting pattern is designed to fit the 16" vinyl-bodied A Girl For All Time® dolls, as well as Sylvia Natterer Starlette™.

Recommended Fabrics:  US superfine (yarn weight 1) yarns, sock yarn, UK/SA/Aus/NZ 4 ply yarns

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical

The center back closes with buttons to the midpoint, and thereafter the lace is seamed together.

FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • The dress is designed for medium-weight bridal or evening-wear fabrics, such as crepe-backed satin, shantung silk, taffeta, silk dupioni or brocade. - Cotton lawn, batiste, or a fine woven polyester/cotton blend fabric is suggested for the lining.
  • The cape is designed for all-over lace fabric. A small motif pattern works best for dolls. You may wish to "fussy cut" lace fabric with a larger motif, but you will need extra fabric to match any obvious patterns.  - Venise lace trim is recommended to edge the lace cape and the Juliet-style cap.  - You will also need buckram or home dec heavyweight non-fusible interfacing for the shell of the cap.

Supplies Needed:

  • 3/4 yard of 44" wide satin fabric for the dress with the train, OR 1/2 a yard of 44" wide main fabric for the straight hem option dress.
  • 3/4 yard of 44" wide lining fabric for the dress with the train, OR 1/2 a yard of 44" wide lining fabric for the straight hem option dress.
  • 2 yards of 18" wide or wider all-over lace fabric for the bride's cape, or 11" x 30" for the bridesmaid's cape.
  • The Juliet-style cap can be cut from the leftover fabrics used for the dress. If you are making the cap separately, you will need 7" x 10" pieces of main fabric and lining fabric.
  • A 12" or longer invisible zipper for the back closure of the dress.
  • 9 small (1/4" – 3/8", 6-8 mm) shank style buttons for the bride's cape, OR 11 buttons for the bridesmaid's cape.
  • Venise lace trim – 4 yards for the bride's cape and cap; 2 yards is sufficient for the bridesmaid's cape and cap.
  • Small fabric flowers for decorating the back of the cap.
  • 7" x 10" buckram or home dec heavyweight sew-in (non-fusible) interfacing for the cap shell.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Historical
Price: 8.99

This pattern, by Genniewren Designs, contains everything you need to make a modern-style Welsh costume: blouse, skirt, apron, bonnet, Welsh hat, and shawl.

  • The blouse has lace applied to the front, gathered lace at the collar, a center back fastening and long sleeves with elasticized ruffles at the wrist.
  • The skirt features unpressed pleats and a hip yoke with an elasticized waist for easy fit. Instructions are included for applying a straight or chevron band of ribbon to the skirt if desired.
  • The rectangular apron is gathered at the waist and ties at the back. Sometimes you will see shorter, curved edge aprons (waitress-style) on purchased costumes, but the rectangular shape is more traditional and is required for school dancing.
  • The shawl is a simple square of fabric, with fringed edges. The most common type of fabric used for modern Welsh costumes is red and black plaid, but Paisley print shawls are also worn in some areas.
  • The bonnet is cut in one piece. Lace is applied to the front edge that surrounds the face. The ruffle is created by attaching narrow elastic a little distance from the curved hem edge. Narrow ribbons are used as ties.
  • The Welsh hat is made from felt and is fully lined. It is based on the modern conical style of Welsh hat. This hat is sewn together rather than molded. The hat can be stiffened with a card, template plastic or heavyweight interfacing. Lace can be applied to the underside of the brim of the Welsh hat, or the bonnet can be worn under the hat. Either is acceptable. Some schools wear just the bonnet for dancing, others wear just the hat, so it is largely a matter of personal choice whether you apply the lace or wear the bonnet under the hat.

The style of Welsh costume you can make with this pattern is based on the clothing worn by school girls on St David's day.

So, whether she wants to explore her Welsh heritage, or to enjoy a little school dancing on St David's day, your 18 inch doll is sure to love this charming ensemble.

FABRIC RECOMMENDATIONS:

  • Blouse: lightweight woven cotton or poly-cotton blends, such as batiste, lawn, chambray, or shirting-weight fabrics.
  • Skirt: medium-weight woven cotton fabric, such as quilter's cotton, gingham, broadcloth, poplin, percale or sheeting fabrics.
  • Apron: lightweight woven cotton or poly-cotton blends, such as batiste, lawn, chambray, or shirting-weight fabrics. Traditionally the aprons were made from homespun fabrics, gingham is often used as a substitute for dance school uniforms.
  • Shawl: light to medium-weight woven fabric with a soft drape, such as lawn, chambray, or challis. Checkered fabric such as gingham or houndstooth is traditional in some parts of Wales, and Paisley style fabric is traditional in others.
  • Bonnet: cream, ivory or white lightweight woven cotton or poly-cotton, such as batiste or lawn.
  • Welsh Hat: Felt. Acrylic craft felt is acceptable but may not be as hard-wearing as felt with a high wool content.  A medium weight woven fabric is suitable for the lining.  For the stiffener, you will need home dec heavy weight interfacing, card or template plastic.

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: 18 Inch Modern
Price: 4.99

The Military-Style Cover, by Genniewren Designs, is a form of peaked cap. The design is based on a real officer's cap and is fully lined. It features a flat sloping crown, a cap band, a peak (or bill in military parlance, also sometimes called a visor) and traditionally features eyelets for “ventilation”.

This military-style cap pattern can be used for most branches of the military world-wide, depending on the color fabric you use. It also works for police uniforms, security guards, chauffeurs, bus drivers, in fact any uniform that needs a smart cap! The pattern includes two sizes to make allowance for dolls with slightly different sized heads. It contains two styles, both with a sloping crown. View A has a tall crown height, View B has a standard crown height. Simply use the lower crown pieces to match your chosen cap style – all the other pattern pieces are the same for both versions.

The peaked cap has been around as a style for quite some time. It dates back to the early 19th century when it was brought in to replace the more cumbersome bicorne and tricorne hats worn by officers during the Napoleonic wars.

During the Crimean War (1853-56) officers wore peaked caps to distinguish themselves from the lower ranks who wore mainly pillbox style hats with a chin strap (a bit like a bellhop’s hat). Afterwards, it became fashionable for officers to add gold braid and “frogging” onto the cap bills so that an officer’s rank was immediately apparent to other members of the organization. The tradition has continued ever since in the British military, and the gold braid is informally called “scrambled eggs” in the Royal Navy.
By the First World War the peaked cap style of head covering was worn by most ranks as part of their every day uniform. Nowadays a softer more casual style of headgear is worn day to day, with the peaked cap remaining part of the Number 1 and Number 2 dress uniforms.

So where did the idea for this shape headgear come from?
The origins of the peaked cap lie in humble roots. A very similar style cap was worn by the working men of Northern Europe, particularly fishermen and manual laborers. The caps were made from wool, canvas or reclaimed fabric. The bill helped to protect the eyes from bright sunlight and also from the rain. Those who worked outdoors in poor weather would sometimes waterproof the hat with tar. It’s thought that this is the origin of the shiny bill or visor for some of the military caps.

Believe it or not, during the 1970s a denim peaked cap was very popular as a male fashion accessory, especially when worn with a matching denim “safari suit”. A little later in the same decade the girls borrowed the style too, wearing their denim peaked caps with hot pants and peasant blouses.

Today, this style of cap is still popular as a fashion accessory, and not just in the military. Peaked caps are worn by marching bands, by members of voluntary first aid organizations, by biker groups, and they are even a fashion item in Japanese youth culture.

A set of machine embroidery designs featuring military-style cap patches and "frogging" for the cap bill is also available from larougetdelisle.

Recommended Fabrics:  This pattern is designed for mid to heavier weight woven fabrics such as denim, cotton drill or linen/cotton blends. It can also be made from medium weight woolen fabrics. Fabric requirements will differ depending on how many colors you wish to use for the cap.

Supplies Needed:
--One quarter of a yard or a fat quarter is sufficient for a single color cap with no contrast band or bill.
- 11" x 22" lining fabric
- 6" x 10" heavyweight fusible interfacing for the bill

For caps with contrast sections you will need
- 11" x 22" of your main crown fabric
- 14” x 2” strip of fabric for your hat band (this can be cut from the main fabric if desired)
- 12” x 5” fabric for the peak (or bill in US military terms). “Wet look” vinyl fabric gives a good shiny effect, but it lacks body and will need heavy weight interfacing. Satin will also work if you cannot get hold of the vinyl.

OPTIONAL:
- 6 x 1/8” (3mm) eyelets in a color to match your fabric. (With eyelets the measurement is the inside size of the hole.)
- One quarter of a yard of medium weight fusible interfacing – to help give your fabric body if it is lightweight. Please note that if you are using the shiny vinyl fabric that is not suitable for fusible interfacing, so you will need to use the sew-in interfacing instead.
- 2 brass buttons for the hat band if required by the uniform you are making
- 1 yard of mini piping in a suitable color. If you cannot find the piping in your local sewing store, look for mini piping in online heirloom sewing stores, or you can make your own using #5 cotton crochet thread and some bias tape.
- Military braiding, black, brass, gold or silver. You might find some interesting braids in the upholstery section of your hobby store.
- Military-style or police-style cap badge. (Please note that Genniewren Designs has digitized a machine embroidery design set of military style cap badges and cap bill frogging, which is also available at larougetdelisle.)

Vendor: Genniewren
Type: Knitting
Price: 5.99

Entrelac is a knitting technique that produces a fabric that looks like it is woven, or sewn together from many squares. In fact it is knitted in one piece and can be knitted on just two needles. Although it may look complicated, it is relatively easy to knit if you are familiar with basic increasing and decreasing techniques.

Entrelac knitting has been around for a while. It features in some of the more famous Victorian fancy needlework manuals, and a couple of museums exhibit historical garments from Finland made using this technique that were knitted in traditional Finnish red and black yarns.

The Entrelac Sweater, by Genniewren Designs, for 18" dolls owes its styling to the late 1970s when Entrelac knitting first appeared in magazines and commercial knitting patterns in Europe. The loose fit, dropped shoulderline and polo neck are fashion details that were very popular at that time.

The sweater can be knitted in many colors, in just two colors to give a checkerboard effect, or even in a single color so that the woven texture takes prominence. Examples of all three colorways are shown in the photographs that accompany this listing. Whatever you decide, whether you knit the Entrelac Sweater in your school or team colors, or you choose a variegated yarn, the Entrelac Sweater will fast become one of your doll's favorite things to wear, especially in the fall, winter and early spring.

This pattern contains full, step-by-step photo instructions, schematics with measurements, and full-size blocking templates.

This PDF knitting pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.

Recommended Fabrics: Sock Yarn, Fingering Yarn, Lace yarn, UK 4 ply yarn

Supplies Needed:
- One pair of US Size 0 (metric 2.0 mm) knitting needles, or the size needed to achieve gauge.
- Blunt ended yarn needle for sewing seams
- Three 1/4”-3/8” (6mm – 9mm) buttons for the back closure
- For the multi-color sweater you will need 6 x 1oz (25g) balls of sock or fingering weight yarn. For the two-color sweater I used 2 x 50g balls of lace weight yarn and had lots left over. For the one color sweater a 3.5 oz (100g) ball of yarn is plenty.
