Every time they leave after visiting us, they tuck their dolls (that wait at our house for them to visit again) in for the night. A variety of sleepwear and various blankets, quilts, and other bedding is very popular, since their dolls nap the entire time the granddaughters are away!

This machine embroidery design set was inspired by our girls and the newest American Girl® doll, Kira Bailey™, who is spending the summer at an animal sanctuary in Australia, and thus the koala focus. The sleepy koala design is adorable in both of the filled and the appliqué versions, and is especially cute adorning the square and diamond-shaped quilt blocks or a pillow (note: the square quilt block makes a perfect pillow!) The color scheme works well with almost any color I tried (note the pink, blue, and purple, which my girls love!) The Sacque-Back Gown, as it was commonly known in England and the American Colonies, originated in France as the robe à la française as an undress fashion. Undress meant that they were informal articles of clothing that were presentable enough to wear inside one's home while entertaining, but not something one would wear in public. It's most notable feature was the box pleats which fell loose from the shoulder to the hem. At its most informal, this gown was unfitted in both the front and back and called a contouche, or robe battante. The style was not limited to gowns, but also carried over into shortened jacket forms that were called caracos or pet en l'ier. The jackets were originally knee length, but shortened to just above the hips as the century progressed. Toward the middle of the 18th century, the Sacque-Back had emerged as one of the most fashionable gowns, and by the 1770s, it was second only to court dress in its formality. As these gowns gained popularity, the artist Antoine Watteau captured their elegance in many of his paintings which later led to them being referred to as Watteau Gowns.

I’ll never forget the trip we made to Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. All the Bavarian towns we visited were so charming. The shops were full of cuckoo clocks and delicate chocolates. The restaurants each had a huge variety of local ales. I especially enjoyed seeing the tour guides dressed in their dirndls. There were so many styles, each one special. And, of course, the hills were alive with music and cows with little bells, but we didn’t see any of the iconic Edelweiss.
That trip was the inspiration for this sweet Bavarian-style dress, by FROG Princess Fashions. The design is made in one piece: a dress with a blouse-like sleeves, a bodice that also poses as a vest, and a contrasting skirt, with a detachable little apron worn over it all. The entire set is easy to make and is so sweet trimmed in lace, rick-rack, or embroidery. It’s versatile, too, and can be made with short puffed sleeves, or longer, gathered bishop sleeves, with or without the apron, and with a contrasting bodice (vest) or not.
And since we didn’t see any Edelweiss, I made some! The Edelweiss custom set of embroidery designs from Frog Princess Fashions can be used to embellish the vest front and back, the center of the sleeves, and the hem of the dress and apron. And don’t forget to look for the Edelweiss machine embroidery sets to make coordinating shoes and dress designs!

The German word Lederhosen means “Leather Breeches”. Originally these pants were commonly worn as work wear for hard physical work across central Europe. Today they are worn as leisurewear and considered traditional folk costumes in regions like Bavaria and Austria. They are also seen at Oktoberfest events across the world. Lederhosen have become a symbol of regional pride in Bavaria and other areas where they are worn.
With this pattern you can sew your doll his own Lederhosen with H-Style suspenders and a felt Alpine hat.
The pants have a drop front flap and two working pockets in the front. There is a single side pocket. I have simplified the pants for it to be more practical for doll size and easier doll play.
The area for embroidery is very small on these doll size pants. You can add hand or machine embroidery to the front flap and pants front. An instruction for this is not included.
Pair the outfit with white or green socks, brown leather look shoes and a white or check button up shirt.

Originally made from pieces of animal hide or rough cloth, they were a practical garment that served as outerwear during the day and a blanket at night. The Regimental Cloak by Thimbles and Acorns  is cut in a circle to give it an impressive drape ~ fit for a General. For added protection from the elements, it also features an elbow length cape and a high collar. Both the cloak and cape are fully lined.

This PDF sewing pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl® and other similarly sized dolls.

Complete the look with the 18th Century Shirt and George Washington, Commander in Chief patterns.

Inspired by classic fairytale books, and my love of mountains, this adorable pattern allows your doll to visit the alps too. Alternatively, take a different twist and you have an outfit for your doll working around the house or creating craft projects. Take it a step further by removing the apron and scarf, and you have a beautiful pinafore over a smart blouse, which is just perfect for an outing to town or a visit to the relatives.

 The “Tyrol” outfit, by Karen Lorraine Design, consists of a crisp, unlined blouse (with optional collar) and a trendy pinafore. Both pieces have easy-to-open back closures of hook and loop tape or snap fasteners. The clean-cut apron adds versatility to the pattern, while the bonus headscarf has extra-long ties to allow for easy securing. There is also a special section in this pattern demonstrating the ribboned variation of the pinafore.

Recommended Fabrics: Woven fabrics like cotton, lawn, voile, quilting cotton, broadcloth.
