This timeless shirtwaist-style dress is inspired by a vintage Swiss sewing pattern and features heirloom details including corded pintucks and piping trim.
The fitted shirtdress has a front yoke, faux front placket, square bias-cut collar, short sleeves with turned up cuffs, and a full dirndl-style skirt.
This PDF sewing pattern is designed to fit 18" dolls such as American Girl®.
Recommended Fabrics: medium-weight woven fabric such as cotton chambray, linen, dimity, or cotton pique
Supplies Needed:
-Dress: 1/2 yard medium-weight woven fabric such as cotton chambray, linen, dimity, or cotton pique.
Lining: Fat eighth (9" x 20") of lightweight woven fabric such as Imperial batiste. Lining may be white or another color that complements the dress fabric
-Trim: 1/2 yard whip-stitch or corded mini-piping. (Note: Online retailer Farmhouse Fabrics is our favorite source for doll-size piping and trims. For best results, select piping with a 1/4" seam allowance.)
-Notions: Two spools of coordinating thread (or one large spool and an extra bobbin), 7 - 3/8" buttons, a scrap of lightweight fusible interfacing, a water soluble marking pen, one ball of white pearl cotton (size 5) for corded pintucks. You will also need a pintuck foot for your sewing machine and a twin machine needle that matches the width of the grooves on the foot. We suggest a 2.0 mm twin needle and corresponding foot. Optional: 1-1/4 yards 5/8" wide grosgrain ribbon for sash.

Our Outlander ensemble is inspired by Claire's everyday dresses but it would be equally appropriate fashion for a Highland lassie of 10 to 13. (While young girls--and boys--wore nothing but a cotton shift, older girls dressed like little adults--often in made-over versions of their mothers' cast-off clothing!)
This PDF sewing pattern includes four pieces:
Peplum Bodice has a basque waist and laces up the front with ribbon threaded through eyelets;
Tartan Petticoat is pleated to a fitted waistband with side openings and drawstring ribbon ties;
Stomacher fills in the bodice front opening and is held in place by the lacings;
Bum Roll is worn under the bodice and petticoat for an authentic period silhouette.
A bonus knitting pattern is also included for the Sassenach Cowl.
Recommended Fabrics: Bodice: wool suiting or cotton velveteen; Petticoat: pima cotton plaid or quilting cotton; Stomacher: quilting cotton; Bum Roll: unbleached cotton muslin
