Turn A Dragon Into A Unicorn With This Easy Pattern Hack!

Hello everybody! In this pattern hack tutorial, we are using the Crafty Lil' Turkey Dragon's Play pattern and adding a few tweaks to create a darling Unicorn instead

It's super easy to do -- follow along as we show you how!

You will need pattern pieces A-F (G) from Dragon’s Play 18 inch pattern by Crafty Lil Turkey.

You can download the additional new Unicorn pieces HERE needed to make the Unicorn Jacket as seen on Instagram and shown in the image above.  There are new wings (for a Pegasus or Alicorn option), new ears and new eyes included and of course a horn.

  1. All of the directions remain the same for the jacket.

  1. For the Ears (H2), after they are turned right side out, fold the ear on the fold line before attaching.

  1. For the Wings (O2), keep in mind the direction for the decorative Top Stitching will be different than those in the pattern as the design is different.

  1. The new eyes are found on the new eye and ear placement guide. They can be drawn, traced, or transferred on in various ways.  I cut carefully through the paper and used it as a stencil to trace mine on with a pencil. Then embroidered them on using a Zigzag Stitch.

  1. For the Horn, you will need a knit fabric like jersey or a stretch fabric such as fleece. Stitch up the side using a ¼” (6 mm) seam allowance, then trim the seam allowance to 1/8” (3 mm).  Turn the horn right side out.

  1. You will need a little bit of stuffing. Stuff the horn making sure to start with stuffing little bits into the tip so there is not a gap at the top. Once it is stuffed, using a needle and thread and sew a Running Stitch around the bottom of the horn. Pull it tight and tie it securely.

  1. Before cutting the thread, decide if you want it plain and smooth or a spiral horn. For a Spiral Horn, using the same thread, if there is enough or a new piece, use a Running Stitch diagonally upward from the bottom to the tip of the horn. Pull it slightly causing it to tighten around the stuffing. Tie it off at the top of the horn.
  1. The placement of the horn is in between the ears of the finished Jacket just above Piece B. With the Seam of the horn toward the back of the jacket matching the seam lines of Pieces C, push the horn down flattening the bottom of the horn.
  2. Angle the horn slight backward, if desired. This will make it stand straighter when the doll is wearing it and not pointing toward the front.
  3. Pin in place. Hand Stitch the horn securely in place through the Main fabric of the hood.

Congratulations! You've just hacked a pattern successfully!

Thanks for following along, and have fun with this!

Where is the PDF for the horn, Wings, and Eyes, please? It says in the post above that “The PDF below has the new pieces needed…” but there is no pdf underneath that post, nor anywhere else on this page. The original pattern being tweaked doesn’t say anything about them either when I go to check that pattern. Any help here please?
